9 Traits Of An Actual Narcissist

Businessman being adored by crowds to represent Narcissistic behaviorEveryone knows someone they’re sure is a flat out ‘narcissist’. We use that term as a slur for a kind of personality, mainly because we act as though the person just chose to be this way.

But do we really understand what it means?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it’s a unique personality disorder with its own set of symptoms and treatments. In order to be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), a person needs to display at least five of nine qualities in various situations.

These include:

  • A grandiose sense of self-importance.
  • Fantasies about having or deserving.
  • A sense of self-superiority.
  • A need for excessive admiration.
  • A sense of entitlement.
  • Exploitative behavior.
  • A lack of empathy.
  • Frequent envy.
  • Arrogance.

Recognizing these symptoms doesn’t make it any easier to be around people. However, it does provide some emotional separation from their behavior, and an understanding that it’s not about you at all. This is a person who will likely doesn’t see their own behavior as bad, the alienation it causes, nor the need to get help from a professional.
