{"id":5364,"date":"2017-04-28T08:38:14","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T12:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.willclower.com\/blog\/?p=5364"},"modified":"2019-05-30T15:04:47","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T19:04:47","slug":"taking-the-stairs-may-boost-energy-more-than-drinking-caffeinated-beverages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mymedwellness.com\/blog\/?p=5364","title":{"rendered":"Taking the stairs may boost energy more than drinking caffeinated beverages"},"content":{"rendered":"<section>\n<div id=\"rcs-articleHeader\" class=\"group wrap\">\n<div class=\"column1 col col-10\">\n<div class=\"article-header\">\n<p class=\"article-headline\"><span class=\"articleLocatio&lt;\/span&gt;n\" style=\"transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px); font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">For young women running on little sleep, 10 minutes of stair walking increased energy more than the amount of caffeine in a soda or half a cup of coffee, according to a small study.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div id=\"rcs-articleContent\" class=\"group wrap\">\n<div class=\"column1 col col-10\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">This energy boost is relatively short, and overtired workers may need to do a few bouts of exercise throughout the day to keep up energy long term, the researchers write in the journal Physiology and Behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThere are many people who are sleep deprived and report low energy. We focused on women because they more frequently report low energy compared to men,\u201d said study coauthor Patrick O\u2019Connor, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Georgia in Athens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">To compare the effects of caffeine and exercise on energy level, the study team recruited 18 female college students with average caffeine intake and physical activity levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The women in the study were also relatively sleep-deprived, with all reporting sleeping 6.5 hours or less per night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Before starting the experiment, the women answered questions assessing their feelings of energy or vigor and their motivation levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The women also completed cognitive tests measuring their attention, short-term memory and reaction times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Participants then received either a flour-filled placebo pill, a caffeine pill containing 50 mg of caffeine (about equivalent to a soda or half a cup of coffee), or completed a 10-minute stair-walking exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">After receiving a pill or doing the exercise, the women completed the cognitive tests and questionnaires two more times, 30 minutes and 50 minutes later. The women also rated their feelings of energy a third time, about an hour and 15 minutes after the experiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The experiment was repeated two more times over three days, to ensure that each woman experienced each experimental condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The researchers found that women who did 10 minutes of stair-walking reported significantly higher levels of energy than women who took the caffeine equivalent of a can of soda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">This effect lessened over time, though, and the caffeine and exercise groups had similar energy levels an hour after the experiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The interventions did not significantly affect attention, memory, or reaction time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The effect of exercise in this study was fairly short-lived, O\u2019Connor noted, but other studies suggest that multiple short bouts of exercise spread throughout the workday can offer more long-lasting energy, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"related-content group-one\">\n<p class=\"related-content-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A person\u2019s level of fitness may influence what intensity exercise may be helpful for them, said Namrita Kumar, a researcher who studies exercise and attention at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A person with low fitness may be fatigued by intense exercise, which could work against the positive effects they might get from it, noted Kumar, who was not involved in the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cFor individuals who cannot have or prefer to abstain from caffeine, physical activity throughout the day is sufficient and recommended,\u201d Kumar said by email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Everyday ways to boost exercise and energy include, \u201cTake the stairs versus the elevator, park in a further parking spot to increase your walking distance, walk or cycle to work or school instead of driving, and take walking breaks,\u201d Kumar said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cFor sleep deprived office workers, especially during inclement weather, taking a 10-minute walk up the stairs can help office workers feel more energetic,\u201d O\u2019Connor said. \u201cTake a break from sitting in your chair and walk up the stairs for a temporary boost in feelings of energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">SOURCE: bit.ly\/2pJKxsV Physiology and Behavior, online March 14, 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For young women running on little sleep, 10 minutes of stair walking increased energy more than the amount of caffeine in a soda or half a cup of coffee, according &hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[494],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-articles"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p7Qv5g-1ow","jetpack_likes_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":6139,"url":"https:\/\/www.mymedwellness.com\/blog\/?p=6139","url_meta":{"origin":5364,"position":0},"title":"Tired Of Being Tired?
