Oops. Now what? <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You may have heard about docs using stents to open up the pipes, but there are two study-of-studies that don&#8217;t look good for this procedure. <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1.083em; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; border-collapse: collapse; line-height: 18px; \"><b>SYNTAX Study (New England Journal of Medicine)<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1.083em; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; border-collapse: collapse; line-height: 18px; \">\n<ul>\n<li>1,800 patients. The arteries feeding blood to their heart muscle was blocked. Docs either performed 1) a Bypass surgery or 2) a Stent implant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Patients had fewer heart attacks and less need for further intervention with Bypass surgery than with the placement of a drug-eluting stent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Patients receiving the stent had more \u201cbad outcome endpoints\u201d, including 28% greater risk for stroke or myocardial infarction, 48% more likely to need for repeat revascularization <i><b>and 22% more likely to die<\/b><\/i>. The researchers feel that perhaps 5,000 or more deaths annually may be avoided if some stent patients were to have undergone CABG instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Comparison of 13 Clinical Trials (Archives of Neurology)<\/b><\/div>\n<div>But what if your carotid artery is blocked (the big one that runs from your heart, up your neck, and into your brain)? Docs have a couple of options:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>1) surgery by opening the neck, scraping away the plaque buildup that can lead to stroke. <\/div>\n<div>2) Stent the artery. <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; font-size: medium; \"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6; \">\n<ul>\n<li>They found patients who got a carotid stent had a 19 percent higher risk of strokes or death compared with patients who had surgery.<\/li>\n<li>HOWEVER, patients who had a stent had a 55 percent lower risk of a later heart attack and 85 percent reduction in the risk of injury to the cranial nerve compared with surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; line-height: normal; font-size: 16px; \">So, for the heart arteries, it&#8217;s clear that a bypass is better.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; line-height: normal; font-size: 16px; \">But for arteries heading up into your brain, it&#8217;s not clear at all &#8230; you just have to decide which &#8220;risk set&#8221; you are most comfortable with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE69A4YS20101011\">Carotid stent has higher stroke risk than surgery | Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --><a href=\"http:\/\/www.addthis.com\/bookmark.php?v=250&amp;pub=willclower\"><img data-opt-id=1342684942  fetchpriority=\"high\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mlcmmqmgggev.i.optimole.com\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s7.addthis.com\/static\/btn\/v2\/lg-share-en.gif?resize=125%2C16\" width=\"125\" height=\"16\" alt=\"Bookmark and Share\" style=\"border:0\" \/><\/a><!-- AddThis Button END --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Got a blocked artery?
