Not just in the morning &#8230; but before you eat!<span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>Researchers in Belgium recruited 28 healthy, active young men and began stuffing them with a truly lousy diet, composed of <i><b>50 percent fat and 30 percent more calories<\/b><\/i>&nbsp;than the men had been eating.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">They compared 3 groups<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">Some of the men did not exercise at all.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">The 2nd group exercised, but ate before working out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">The 3rd group also exercised (the calories expended in the two exercise groups were identical), but ate after breakfast.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 33px;\">Here&#8217;s what they were eating for breakfast:<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 15px;\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i><b>One of the exercise groups<\/b><\/i> ate a hefty, carbohydrate-rich breakfast before exercising and continued to ingest carbohydrates, in the form of something like a sports drink, throughout their workouts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i><b>The second exercise group<\/b><\/i> worked out without eating first and drank only water during the training. They made up for their abstinence with breakfast later that morning, and the calories they ate were the same as those eaten by the other exercise group.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 33px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>After 6 weeks, here&#8217;s what they found<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">The nonexercising group was, to no one\u2019s surprise, super-sized, having packed on an average of more than six pounds. They developed insulin resistance, and had begun storing extra fat within and between their muscle cells. Both insulin resistance and fat-marbled muscles are metabolically unhealthy conditions that can be precursors of diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">The men <i><b>who ate breakfast before exercising<\/b><\/i> gained weight, too, although only about half as much as the non-exercisers. Like those sedentary big eaters, however, they had become more insulin-resistant and were storing a greater amount of fat in their muscles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">Only the group that exercised before breakfast <i><b>gained almost no weight and showed no signs of insulin resistance<\/b><\/i>. They also burned the fat they were taking in more efficiently.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\"><b>Here&#8217;s the bottom line<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">\u201c<i>Our current data<\/i>,\u201d the study\u2019s authors wrote, \u201c<i>indicate that exercise training in the fasted state is more effective than exercise in the carbohydrate-fed state &#8230;.<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">So if you want to head off diabetes, try changing your routine a bit by exercising before you eat breakfast. Because,<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 33px;\">&nbsp;working out before breakfast directly combated the two most detrimental effects of eating even a high-fat, high-calorie diet.
