This strategy turns out to be healthy, but not for you. It&#8217;s very healthy as a marketing tactic. &nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;\">This study from t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">he&nbsp;<\/span><i style=\"font-weight: normal; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\">European Journal of Clinical Nutrition <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: normal; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\">argues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\">&nbsp;that&nbsp;<\/span><i>nutrient intakes would actually decrease<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> as a result of consuming foods slated for discretionary fortification. That&#8217;s because consumers would reduce intake of foods like vegetables and fruit, meat and alternatives, milk products.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;\">Discretionary fortification has been allowed in the US since the early 1990s as well as Europe. However, according to the Canadian researchers, the potential implications of such a practice for the health of a population&nbsp;<i style=\"outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\">\u201chave been the subject of little research\u201d<\/i>. What studies have been done have indicated a positive impact on nutrient intakes, they noted.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/h4>\n<div style=\"color: black; font: normal normal normal 11px\/normal Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\">\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">The new paper adds to a previous article by Sacco and Tarasuk published in the<i style=\"outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\">Journal of Nutrition<\/i>&nbsp;in 2009 (Vol. 139, No. 10, pp. 1980-1986). That article described Health Canada&#8217;s&nbsp;proposed discretionary fortification policy as being<i style=\"outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\">\u201cmisaligned with the nutritional needs of Canadians\u201d<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><b>The more &#8220;fortifiable foods&#8221; there are, the less fruits and veggies get eaten.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">An inverse association between fortifiable food intakes and the number of servings of foods like fruit and vegetables, dairy products, and meat was observed for most age and gender groups. These inverse associations also extended to vitamins A, D, B6 and B12, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and fiber, report the researchers.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><b>What does this mean?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: static;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">The only reason processed food products are eligible for fortification in the first place are because there&#8217;s nothing of redeeming nutritive value in them to start with!!
