Love that.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">But then I read further in this article (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/06\/10\/us-evidence-shaky-idUSTRE7594HH20110610\">click here to read<\/a>) to find out that the title was completely misleading. Grrr. I started getting hot flashes!! Listen to this:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\"><b>What The Did In The Study<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\">The authors reviewed 10 studies that had tested acupuncture techniques in women with PMS. Those studies compared acupuncture with&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>hormonal medications including progestin&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>fake acupuncture treatment<\/li>\n<li>herbal medicines&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>or no treatment at all.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\"><b>What They Found<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\">When the researchers pooled data from those studies, <i><b>acupuncture was about 50 percent better <\/b><\/i>at improving PMS symptoms than <i><b>all other treatments combined<\/b><\/i>. The pattern was the same when they looked just at studies that compared acupuncture to contraceptive pills and just at those that tested acupuncture against fake acupuncture.<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\"><b>How These Scientists Disregard A Whopping 50% Improvement<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;\"><i>The authors write that the 10 studies looked at a range of acupuncture techniques on different body parts &#8212; including the hand, back, and scalp &#8212; and in at least some of the studies, the &#8220;placebo effect&#8221; might have come into play if women or their doctors knew they were getting acupuncture treatment and believed it would work.<\/i><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;\"><span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">WC: But the comparison of acupuncture vs fake acupuncture controls for that!!&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/><i><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; line-height: 22px;\">And, they noted, the original study authors didn&#8217;t always make it clear which specific symptoms had improved, and by how much, in women given acupuncture.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><br \/><i><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">WC: Whatever &#8230; it worked for the symptoms!! That you don&#8217;t have it broken down into subsegments defined by your definitions &#8230; does NOT make it ineffective.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I just don&#8217;t get how these authors can disregard a 50% improvement over all other treatment options combined &#8212; just because they don&#8217;t know WHICH of the PMS symptoms improved.
