I just posted an article here on coffee as a healthy drink, and immediately ran into this CNN piece highlighting research on soda. These are data from Harvard, and it&#8217;s crazy.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Get this:&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">Sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to more than 180,000 obesity-related deaths worldwide each year, according to new research presented this week at an American Heart Association conference.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">&#8220;<i>This means about one in every 100 deaths from obesity-related diseases is caused by drinking sugary beverages<\/i>,&#8221; says study author Gitanjali Singh, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">It sounds like what they&#8217;re saying is NOT that sodas kill you. However, if your goal is to become obese, they can definitely help you with that. If you want to &#8220;live large&#8221;, &#8220;go big or go home&#8221;, turn to sugar sweetened beverages to help you out there.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">As you approach your massiveness objective, you&#8217;re more and more likely to die of a heart attack. What the Harvard guys did is the rigorous epidemiology math to show that your death will be linked directly to the sodas you consumed to get you there.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">Make sense?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a data-show-count=\"false\" data-size=\"large\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/willclower\">Follow @willclower<\/a><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><b>From the CNN story:&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">Recently the American Heart Association came out with a&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/circ.ahajournals.org\/content\/early\/2009\/08\/24\/CIRCULATIONAHA.109.192627.full.pdf+html\" style=\"border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-style: inherit; line-height: 19px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\" target=\"_blank\">scientific statement<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">&nbsp;about sugar intake and heart health because it says there is new evidence about the relationship between the two. The statement says some research has found a link between sugar consumption and cardiovascular disease, while other research has not found a direct link.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">The AHA says that the best way to maintain a healthy weight and to decrease the risk of heart disease is to eat a healthy diet and to limit added sugar to no more than 100 calories a day for women and 150 for men.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19px;\">Soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages are the main source of added sugars in the American diet, according to the statement.
