But what happens <strong><em>physically<\/em><\/strong>, to your heart?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new research study did a clever thing, and reviewed the cases of over 13,000 stroke patients in 2 countries as part of the INTERSTROKE study. They wanted to see what happened just before the stroke (within one hour), to see if there were any patterns that popped out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They discovered that 1 in 11 survivors experienced a period of anger or upset in the 1 hour leading up to the stroke.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Anger&#8217;s not benign,<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">for body nor the mind.\u00a0<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why This Is So Good To Know<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The statistics are staggering.<\/span> The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that someone has a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of stroke every four minutes. This is among almost 800,000 people in the US who have a stroke every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are long term lifestyle factors that affect your risk, but we all know these &#8212; eat well, eat in control, be active, practice stress management, reduce high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But this new research shows what&#8217;s linked to a potentially life-threatening cerebral stroke from just 1 hour before! In fact, these results suggested that anger could increase your risk of stroke by 30% in the hour after that strong emotional upset occurs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Acute anger or emotional upset was associated with the onset of all stroke, ischemic stroke, and ICH (<\/em>intracerebral bleeding<em>), while acute heavy physical exertion was associated with ICH only<\/em>,&#8221; the authors wrote. It didn&#8217;t matter what region the subjects lived in, their prior cardiovascular disease history, other risk factors, cardiovascular medications, time or day of symptom onset.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Your Take-Home Message<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, you should still practice the long term lifestyle approach: eat well, move more, and practice mindfulness in your everyday life.
