While there are concerns about privacy and efficacy, research continues to show that promoting healthy habits to employees \u2013 be it through intensive programs or structural and cultural support (e.g., an on-site gym and encouragement to use it during the lunch break) \u2013 is an effective way to benefit both employer and employee. If health costs are lower, employers may pass a smaller percentage of the bill on to workers. For example, total costs were $176 lower for health program participants, and inpatient hospitalization expenses were lower by $182. Over four years, the program produced a return on investment of $1.65 for every dollar spent on the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Employees who take advantage of wellness are more productive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Research in adults shows a link between physical activity and cognitive benefits like memory and focus.\u00a0<a id=\"anch_28\" href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/joem\/Abstract\/2013\/10000\/Improving_Employee_Productivity_Through_Improved.3.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One study<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"External Link: You are leaving health.gov\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAoAAAAKCAYAAACNMs+9AAAAAXNSR0IArs4c6QAAAAlwSFlzAAALEwAACxMBAJqcGAAAAAd0SU1FB9gCGhErDWL4mOoAAAB6SURBVBjTbVCxDcAgDHNRP2KDY9gYO5YbWNno1mPY6E3pAJEIYCmCOCQOPogII6wNkug4d49KiXMz1EiUEg8uLBN3Ui7FVduYmxjG3JRru+facubVuIdLEV4Dzwe8V4BYg7t4Ap+d57qUnuWICBzi116v1ggfd3bM+AEZWXFvnym8EwAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"External Link: You are leaving health.gov\" \/><\/a>\u00a0found employees who participated in a health promotion program and improved their health care or lifestyle regained an average of 10.3 hours in additional productivity annually and saved their companies an average of $353 per person per year in productivity costs compared to non-participants. According to the\u00a0<a id=\"anch_29\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/publications\/aag\/pdf\/2015\/aag-workplace-health.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>, productivity losses related to personal and family health problems cost U.S. employers $1,685 per employee per year, or $225.8 billion annually.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"anch_30\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23287723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evidence<\/a>\u00a0also indicates that instituting workplace health programs can reduce the average sick leave, health plan, and workers\u2019 compensation and disability insurance costs by approximately 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Physically active employees are healthier<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Employee wellness programs that encourage physical activity can improve the overall health and wellbeing of the workforce. The good news is\u00a0<a id=\"anch_32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/behindtheheadlines\/news\/2016-07-28-an-hour-of-exercise-a-day-may-compensate-for-an-office-lifestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent evidence<\/a>\u00a0suggests that an hour a day of exercise can help mediate the risks of sedentary lifestyle. Exercise has also been associated with lower risks of multiple chronic diseases and can amplify weight loss efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Small business owners may be able to take advantage of tax incentives for workplace wellness programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several U.S. states, including Massachusetts, Indiana, and Mississippi, have considered or implemented tax credits to incentivize small businesses to provide employee wellness programs.
